古代イスラエルの宗教はキリスト教やイスラム教の母体である。ユダヤ教前史及びユダヤ教を考えることなしに、この2つの巨大な宗教を考えることは不可能である。この章では、ユダヤ教とキリスト教の双方にとっての大きな転回点、キリスト教がローマ帝国(ビザンツ帝国)の中に確個たる地位を占める時点までを主に扱う。ここで扱う旧約聖書に基づく伝承は客観的な史実とは分けて考えるべきである。<br />
